TOP 20 releases of 2022!

TOP 20 releases of 2022!

The time has come for our annual roundup, and good lord, what a fantastic year it's been. Our speakers have been blessed with a constant flow of incredible music all year, with so many excellent albums, compilations and reissues coming in from start to end. Music scenes across the globe have bounced back with new energy post-lockdown, we're truly living in a new era. May music continue to be the force that connects us all, the beautiful, ugly, loud, quiet, weird and wonderful avenue for expression that it is. As always, it was such a challenge to pick out favourites this year, but here are 20 titles (in no particular order) that certainly made their mark.

Charles Stepney – Step On Step

Splendid compilation of songs from the legendary R&B producer and arranger Charles Stepney. The tracks here are all demos recorded in Stepney’s Chicago South Side basement, working up songs for Earth, Wind & Fire, Rotary Connection and other collaborators during a dazzlingly fruitful decade before his untimely departure in 1976 at age 45. The intimacy of Step on Step can be felt throughout with the soulful touch of the electric piano, the raw grooves of drum machines and the trademark Moog sounds that reach deep into your soul! A treasure of a release and a truly wholesome sound! We will be putting this one on for a long time.

A poetic album- where listening feels like a conversation between all instruments waxing and waning.

Various – Tanamur City

We were beyond grateful to finally get our hands on this lovely compilation when it came out, compiled by Harry Munir Septiandry of the influential Indonesian DJ collective “Midnight Runners”. Tanamur City features a distinctive Indonesian dance-pop sound that draws from that AOR, disco & jazz sounds that make your feelings tingle and your body jiggle. Various – Padang Moonrise (The Birth Of The Modern Indonesian Recording Industry (1955 to 69)

Ridiculously good compilation of Indonesian music that emerged underneath the volcanoes of Java and Sumatra. Java, the most populous island in the archipelago of over 17,000 islands and 1300 distinct ethnic groups, and its capital city Jakarta, was where most of the post-colonial national identity, politics, administration and music production was centred. The results are a unique blend of styles that have remained mostly insulated from the world outside of Indonesia until a recent worldwide resurgence in the interest of recorded music of all forms has shone a new light on these nearly forgotten recordings.

Adhianto Aryo – Sintaksis

Still in Indonesia but moving forward to another end of sounds, here's a potent offering on DIVISI62 - one for the leftfield & experimental heads. The fluctuating sonics take on a chaotic disposition, representing the accumulated distress and volatility that have become the fabric of normalcy in Jakarta. Untangle your clots of negative energy and give this a try.

Rounding up the list here we have a beautiful tribute album from Ali Farka Touré’s son Vieux Farka Toure & Khruangbin, bringing Malian music to broader groups of listeners.
